Overview

The View application allows to specify exactly the view on Google Earth and visualize it also in Google Maps. The application can run only if the Google Earth Plugin is installed in the browser.

The application displays Google Map in the left panel and Google Earth in the right panel. The panel sizes can be adapted by dragging the middle separator. The Google Earth shows a view at the point "Look At" from the point "Eye". The point "Eye" represents the camera and cannot obviously be shown in the Google Earth. However, both points can be displayed on the Google Map (L = "Look At", E = "Eye"). The points can be dragged on the Google Map and both views are automatically and synchronously updated. The height of the "Eye" can be changed using the "Eye height" control in the bottom right corner. The "Look At" point is always on the surface of the Earth. The "Look At" can also be dragged on the Google Earth and again both views are updated."

View Dialog

The View dialog displays the numerical values of the current view and allows to specify exactly a new view. Dragging and scaling one of the panels does not affect the view parameters. The button Get gets the view that is currently displayed in the Earth panel, sets the "Look At" point into the center of the image and updates the dialog values accordingly.

Height is measured relative to the terrain (above the ground).
Altitude is measured above the sea level.
Elevation is the altitude of the terrain above the sea level. These three values are related by the equation:
Altitude = Elevation + Height.
Heading is the angle between the direction Eye->LookAt and the north direction. It is slightly different for "Eye" and "LookAt" because the longitude lines are not parallel.
Tilt is the angle between the direction LookAt->Eye and the vertical line which is perpendicular to the Earth surface.
For details please consult the Google documentation.

A new view can specified by one of the following ways:

  1. Eye

All enabled values in the "Eye" column are specified and then the button Set Eye is pressed.
  2. Look At

All enabled values in the "Look At" column are specified and then the button Set Look At is pressed.
  3. Both Points

All enabled values in the the first 3 rows are specified and then the button Set Both Points is pressed.

Note that the "Eye" can be above the surface, while "Look At" is always on the surface. This convention is also used by Google Earth.

Load Dialog

It is possible to load file with a view that was saved previously or was established in the stand-alone Google Earth application. The file must have the KML format. The file is located on the local computer by pressing Browse and then loaded by pressing Load.

Save Dialog

The current view can be saved in the KML format on the local computer and later loaded by this application or by the stand-alone Google Earth application. The "Place Name" will appear in the stand-alone Google Earth application and helps to identify the view. The button Save opens the usual file dialog and let you specify the file name.

Search Address Dialog

This dialog finds the geographical location of an address. The location can be used to set up the "Eye" or the "Look At" by pressing the respective button.

Options Dialog

It can be specified in which format the latitude and longitude are displayed and what should Height/Altitude mean.
